Ten Top Moments MLB Players Lost Control of Their Bats

Baseball Bats can be dangerous, flying objects when a professional athlete lets them go. We’ve seen the danger first-hand in recent events. But sometimes these bat releases turn in to great fun for the fans and epically-entertaining moments.  So we’ve compiled ten video clips of times that bats have flown out of the hands of Major League hitters and turned in to something safe and memorable. If you’re time is limited, you will want to skip to numbers 1-3.

10. Chris Carter of the Houston Astros

This broken bat fortunately did not hit anyone! A sharp object flying that fast could seriously hurt someone! However, the fan to retrieved this bat seemed to be very pleased with his new souvenir!

Pitcher: Scott Kazmir of the Oakland A’s
Stadium: Minute Maid Park
Aftermath: Bat breaks in half and flies into the crowd.

9. Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers

This is a classic case of a batter simply and surprisingly losing his grip. Carlos Gomez seemed to watch in shock as his bat soars behind him into the stands The bat did not hit anyone, but there were several die-hard fans scrambling to retrieve the souvenir!

Pitcher: Alex Cobb of the Tampa Bay Rays
Stadium: Tropicana Field
Aftermath: No one was injured and the fan kept a nice souvenir.

8. Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians

As Asdrubal Cabrera swings at the 84 mph pitch, he loses grip of the bat and it flies into the crowd. The bat nails the little lady in the pink shirt in the arm! Another fan does not seem too concerned about the woman’s well-being and grabs the bat and goes back to his seat.

Pitcher: Andrew Miller of the Boston Red Sox
Stadium: Progressive Field
Aftermath: The bat hit an elderly lady in the arm but another fan kept the bat.

7. Hitter: Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins

The fan who caught this bat was so excited he set his drink down and showed the bat off to the rest of the crowd! Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton is kneeling on home plate, not wanting to watch what damage his bat could do, and the lady sitting next to the fan is rubbing her arm in pain.

Pitcher: Alredo Simon of the Cincinnati Reds
Stadium: Great American Ball Park
Aftermath: Bat flies into crowd and a guy sets down his drink to catch it!

6. Hitter: Addison Russell of the Chicago Cubs

This lady probably just wanted to go to the concession stand and get a hot dog or some nachos; instead she is nailed in the shoulder with a high-speed wooden bat! Although she was okay, she probably was not very happy with what happened. She did not even get to keep the bat. Another fan grabbed the bat while the lady who got hit was still trying to figure out what came flying into her shoulder!

Pitcher: Gerrit Cole of the Pittsburgh Pirates
Stadium: Wrigley Field
Aftermath: Lady walking up the stadium stairs gets hit with bat in the shoulder.

5. Hitter: Justin Sellers of the Los Angeles Dodgers

Justin Sellers of the Los Angeles Dodgers lets his bat soar into the stands! In the replay, you see that the bat narrowly misses a fan in the front row then bounces up right into the hand of the guy behind him. Security comes to talk to the fans, but he does get to keep the bat.

Pitcher: Jake Westbrook of the St. Louis Cardinals
Stadium: Dodgers Stadium
Aftermath: No one was injured and the fan kept the bat

4. Jesus Sacre of the Seattle Mariners

The fan who caught Jesus Sacre’s bat had the crowd around him almost bowing down! The spectator had his eye on the bat as soon as it flew out of Sacre’s hands. He then held it up and presented it to the rest of the stadium.

Pitcher: Miguel Gonzalez of the Baltimore Orioles
Stadium: Orioles Park
Aftermath: The fan caught it and showed it off to the crowd!

3. Moises Sierra of the Chicago White Sox

There is always something so scary about being a pitcher, and that would be the risk of a ball or bat coming right back at you leaving you no time to react. Moises Sierra’s bat broke in half and the barrel smashes into Travis Wood’s pitching arm! He did not let it stop him, though. He stayed in the game and continued to pitch.

Pitcher: Travis Wood of the Chicago Cubs
Stadium: U.S Cellular Field
Aftermath: Broken bat comes back at the pitcher and hits him in the arm. He stayed in the game.

2. Hitter: Chris Carter of the Houston Astros

As the announcer says, this is something very rarely seen before! Shortstop Eric Sogard was so focused on getting behind that ball to make a play he does not even notice the broken bat flying towards him.The bat seemed to just follow the ball right to Sogard. The batter would probably have been out at first base had his bat not taken down the player with the ball! The batter, Chris Carter, was actually the batter in video #10, also. To make it even more strange in both videos, the teams are Oakland and Houston, but they have switched stadiums and this video is a year earlier

Pitcher: Sonny Gray of the Oakland A’s
Stadium:Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum
Aftermath: Bat flies into the infield taking down the shortstop, Eric Sogard

1. Trot Nixon of the Boston Red Sox

At first watch this video seems to be just another batter losing control of his bat, but if you listen to the announcers they do not believe Trot Nixon did this on accident! Trot looks to have simply allow the bat to slide out of his hands while pointing almost directly at the pitcher — on purpose!

Pitcher: Ryan Rupe of the Tampa Bay Rays
Stadium: Fenway Park
Aftermath: Bat flies past Rupe all the way to second base
